Dear friends, especially those in the DC area:

We just came back from donating some supplies at the Salvation Army location at 518 South Glebe Road in Arlington to support the Pentagon crew's efforts. They have a great system in place - just drive up, tell them where the goods are, and they'll taking them out so you can get out of the way. At the bottom of this email is a list of items for which there is still an urgent need. Please do what you can.

Also included in the forward are ways in which you can make other donations or donate your time. No matter your political affiliation or view on the events recent and upcoming, some people are in need and we are all in a position to help. I've also found some quick ways to give online at http://www.yahoo.com that will benefit both or either of the rescue/cleanup efforts.

Subject: [SVDC] Ways you can help the disaster relief effort...
Hello Single Volunteers,
Many emails have come in asking "What can we do to help the rescue
effort and the victims?" of this weeks events. After many attempts at
trying to get through to organizations in charge of the different
efforts, here's what we've found out so far:

For the moment, the Red Cross does not need volunteers. They are
inundated with not only individuals asking to help, but also have their
own disaster trained volunteers that they call upon in times like this.
They are in need of trained rescue workers at this time. If you have
such a talent, please call them at 703-527-3010. The Red Cross will call
SVDC when the expected "lull" hits and they're in need of help. We'll
keep you posted.

The Salvation Army is preparing food for the rescue workers at the
Pentagon. They are currently in need of the items listed below. From
what I understand, the Arlington chapter is rather small and only has
one phone line, so please do not call them. You can drop off any of the
items listed below at 518 South Glebe Road, Arlington. The center is
open 24 hours a day at the moment. While there you can ask them if
they're in need of your assistance, but know that they are also
inundated with volunteers. Again, I'll continue to try and contact them
for additional volunteer opportunities and keep you posted.
Also, some funds have been set up to accept donations. Please be careful
where you send your money. Unfortunately, there may be some bogus funds
set up. :(

*ham radio operators
*boxes to transport food (should be clean and sturdy)
*blankets
*rain ponchos
*sunscreen
*batteries for cell phones (sizes not indicated, if you know someone at
MCI, Sprint, AT&T Wireless, etc. that can donate free cell phones for
rescuers to use to call home, please ask them for their assistance!)
*cooking oil (huge need!!)
*non latex gloves
*trash bags
*baby wipes
*hand sanitizer
*toiletries (travel sizes only, soap, toothpaste, mouthwash, etc.)
*instant cups of soup
*individual packets of hot chocolate
*power/granola type bars
*chips/snacks individual sizes packets
*men's briefs
