Greetings from sunny Washington, D.C.!
My news: there IS hope for new music! It
lies in a fairly astounding conglomerate
of musicians and you can check out their
- now "our" - stuff at
http://www.metatronpress.com. In
addition to the below press coverage of
my 5Dec99 performance with this crew, I
have an engagement on Sunday, 12Dec99 at
the Baltimore Museum of Contemporary Art
in a Cage concert where I will be
performing with the trio Comma on John
Cage's Four^6. It will be a stirring
performance, no doubt.
To see what else I'm doing these days,
please go to
http://www.questpercussion.com. As
always, you can find some recent
writings at http://www.gigcity.com.
Please drop a line when you get a
chance!
regards/BF

Some think the capital city isn't
exactly a new-music capital, but what
other town would have presented Cecil
Taylor or Tan Dun's "Ghost Opera" for
free? We've also got seat-of-the-pants
promoters like Derek Morton, Transparent
Productions, and Chuck Bettis, as well
as the Punk, Not Rock salon, wedging
unconventional tonalities into the
town's music scene. The Galaxy Hut is
doing its part tonight with its Fringe
Music Night presentation. Featuring Gray
Code (three-man ensemble Comma - Thomas
Bickley, Matthew Ross Davis, and Joseph
Zitt - plus Jonathan Matis and Brian
Fending on guitar and percussion), the
show will fill the Hut with the sounds
of improvisation, aleatoric composition,
and electro-acoustic soundscapes.
Premieres include a piece by Matis that
uses a Boggle (TM) game to compose its
score and Davis' John Cage-inspired take
on Mozart operas. At 9 p.m. at the
Galaxy Hut, 2711 Wilson Blvd.,
Arlington. FREE. (703) 525-8646.
